Mark came to Basil Bodies back in August 2014 with a goal to lose 30 kilos and put on some lean muscle. When you meet Mark for the first time he is quite an imposing figure. Standing at over 6 foot tall and 120kgs + and not saying much you don't know which way to look! Then asking him to strip down and take a few semi-naked photos I must admit I was feeling a little nervous.
Once you get past his size and get to know Mark he is a gentle giant and
really quite funny and doesn't mind having a good laugh. Behind that
tough exterior lies a man who is committed to reaching his goals,
willing to share ideas and help others in the group.
Mark achieved a great result in his first 12 Week Challenge because he had found his WHY. Without a strong and valid reason or why to want to change the way you look and function, it is going to be a losing battle to reach your goals.
Find your why, your strong and powerful reason to lose body fat and
build muscle, feel healthier. Set your goals, remain accountable to them
and you are well on your way to achieving them.
Let's find out about Mark's "Why" and his snap point, the point when he knew he had to do something about his unhealthy habits and ballooning waistline
How old are you and what do you do for a job, family etc?
I am 39yrs old, I work at Foxtel as the National Wholesale Manager and I am married with two children (Connor – 3yrs & Isabella 4yrs).
So what was your snap point? The point where you had enough?
I used to be very fit however I had let myself slip dramatically. It was in a one on one session with one of my senior managers where the topic of my health was raised and Marco (the boss) gave examples of other successful people he’d worked with that had dropped dead of a heart attack at age 45. So I this was the wake up call I needed.
What lead you to gaining so much weight in such little time?
Pure laziness. I moved back to Melbourne from Perth and went from training 6 days a week to absolutely nothing.
How did that make you feel? Did it have an effect on your day to day life?
I felt terrible, constantly tired and irritable and always puffed. I was self-conscious and had a distinct lack of confidence I felt nearly every time I walked past a mirror or reflective surface.
What sort of challenges have you faced during your 12 weeks and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was the 4:30am alarms to get from Sunbury to Coburg for the 5:30am FIRE sessions. Did I overcome them? I would like to think so… at the end of the day you just need to remind yourself of why you’re doing this and just friggin do it!
So tell us about the results you have achieved from the 12 week Challenge and what have you learn't
I’ve dropped around 16 kgs now and I aim to continue over the summer. I’ve learnt that technique is everything when doing resistance training and that overdoing it is more harmful than good. I’ve also learned the importance of nutrition, no longer focused on calories in vs calories out, I concentrate on the fundamentals of meal preparation – Protein, Low-Energy Carbohydrates and Good Fats (Omega 3), and ensuring I make the right High-Energy Carbohydrate choices when inside the metabolic window. I eat so many vegetables now it’s ridiculous…!
You have tried other programs in the past, how does MP differ AND what do you like most about it.
As I have said before I honestly believe all programs work, it’s about making the right choice for you. For me this program of resistance training coupled with correct nutrition is the perfect fit. I have no real compulsion to gorge on High-Energy Carbs (Pasta’s, breads, sweet stuff) so cutting these out was a simple task for me, and correct meal preparation inclusive of LM’s was a simple adoption process. I’m never hungry on this program and have found a renewed appreciation for fruit and vegetables that had slipped by the wayside for some time.
Tell us about Basil Bodies, the trainers and what they have helped you achieve....
Hmmmm…. What to say… Archie and Janine have been great! They both put my health and safety first throughout the MP and FIRE sessions, they were extremely attentive to all their clients and they always ensured any and all questions were answered thoroughly. I’ve learned more about resistance training technique and correct nutrition in 12 short weeks with these two gurus than I have across all previous programs combined.
Overall I’m extremely pleased with the way the program works and worked for me and the quality of the trainers and would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to improve their body composition and overall health and wellbeing.
